Gil-bear > Alpha Male Elk which is part of the reintroduction of Elk to the Great Smokey Mountains. The herd is approximately 100 strong although the group we stopped to photograph had about 10 members. I was standing by the road when a park ranger came over to me and stated I needed to move. He pointed behind me and this big guy was standing about 50 yds directly behind me with no intention of moving, so I graciously yielded to him. I was using a 300 mm lens and was unable to focus and get out of his way at the same time. This male crossed within 25-50 feet of me. Once he joined the small herd it was obvious he was the alpha and quickly ran off all contenders for his harem. This photo was taken at a pastures located next to the Oconaluftee Visitor Center. The main herd is located at Cataloochee.
Gil-bear > This Elk came up behind me while I was photographing a small herd across the road from where I was standing. He kindly waited until I got out of his way and then proceeded to join his herd. He was within 25 or 50 feet of me and kindly stopped long enough for me to snap this pose. I was using a 300mm lens and did not have sufficient time to focus but the experience was great.
Gil-bear > This picture of a Doe was taken in the Cades Cove area.
Gil-bear > Another young male Elk.
Gil-bear > Bear walking along the shore of Lake Sherburne at Many Glacier. On the other side of the trees was a hiking trail with a group of hikers on it. Sony DSC-H2; SV-1/125, AV-f/3.7, ISO 160, 72mm. Post processing to bring out colors and sharpness. Glacier National Park, Montana
Gil-bear > National Bison Range outside of Glacier National Park. Sony DSC-H2; SV-1/800, AV-f/4, ISO-160, 22.5mm.
Gil-bear > Mountain Goat and Kid, grazing on land at Logan's Pass. These animals are wild but so conditioned to tourist that they will almost pose for you. We made this trip in August of 2007. Note the snow in the background. Sony DSC-H2; SV-1/1000, AV-f/4.0, ISO-80, 63mm.
